The Weather Notebook Signs Off
It is with regret that the Mount Washington Observatory announces that its daily radio program, The Weather Notebook, aired its final show on December 30, 2005.
The Weather Notebook had its debut in the fall of 1993. The two-minute radio program about weather and how it affects every day life was aired five days a week on more than 300 stations with over 3 million listeners.
The Observatory initially produced the program with seed grants from the National Science Foundation. The challenge with NSF funding was to create an engaging, educational radio program about weather, which could also become financially sustainable for the long term. Corporate sponsorship from Subaru of America complemented the NSF support to sustain the program for 10 years. With Subaru and NSF as partners The Weather Notebook met with great radio affiliate and listener interest, with an eclectic mix of basic scientific information about weather, interviews with prominent meteorologists, and first-person presentations about powerful weather experiences.
"We greatly appreciate the work of many who made The Weather Notebook possible, especially our Host and Producer Bryan Yeaton," said Will Abbott, Executive Director of the Mount Washington Observatory. "Bryan's commitment to a high quality, informative and occasionally light hearted show made this a very unique and special part of the Observatory's education program," he added.
In 2004 NSF support for the program ended, and the continued support of Subaru enabled the program to continue on a more limited production schedule for 2005. Even with ongoing support from Subaru, the Observatory has been challenged to develop sufficient support to continue producing and distributing the show five days a week.
"As we close this chapter in the Observatory's education program, we will use the year ahead to explore new ways to use the media marketplace to help distribute vital knowledge about the Earth's weather and climate."
