Spiders on the Move Producer Robin White looks at how some of the world's creatures are adapting to global climate change. Residents of the South of England are contending with some new insect neighbors these days. Jones a number of species have wandered over from france and are establishing in southern england and moving northwards. Phil Jones, a British climate expert says as global warming takes effect the North European seasons are getting milder and French wasps and spiders are finding the climate in Southern England quite condusive. The new immigrants probably hitched a ride on cross-channel shipping. The spider in particular has the English public in a tizzy. It's alarming because it's a spider that bites and we don't have any biting spiders. Some creatures adapt easily to new homes but for others the need to move because of climate change can cause problems. It may be that as the climate warms...that particular species that may be dependent on that climate or ecosystem will find that it can no longer adapt and live in that area. The risk is particularly acute for endangered species which might be confined to a refuge area which is no longer suitable. Jones recommends creating flexible refuges to allow threatened species to move as the need arises. |
