Hi I'm Dave Thurlow for the Weather Notebook. Listener Sandy Higgins from Nashville, Tennessee recently wrote to us here at the show wondering where I would think the place in the country with the safest weather would be, Taking into account tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes, snowstorms, and any other weather calamities. This got me to thinking. So using a US map, and taking a blind stab, I came up with a town in southwestern Utah called, oddly enough, Hurricane. But how can a town called Hurricane....

Phone rings: "Hurricane Valley Chamber."

Hi, my name is Dave Thurlow and I'm calling from a radio program called the Weather Notebook. I had heard that Hurricane might have the best weather in the country.

"I think you're right."

And also some of the safest weather, too. So, you don't get snowstorms in the winter?

"Maybe just a skift and the snow would be gone by midday."

How much snow did you say?

"A skift, maybe an inch."

A skift, that's a good word. How about tornadoes? Had any in the last few years?

"A what?"

Tornado.

"A tornado? Never heard of one. Our town is called Hurricane and we've never had one."

How about locusts? Or, the plague?

"Everybody here has cochroaches."

Well, if that's the worst that you have I think you have it pretty good.

Ann Stokes in her hometown of Hurricane, Utah, which just might have the safest weather in the country.
