Today is Hurricane Thanksgiving, that is if you happen to live in the Virgin Islands. And historian Myron Jackson does.

"Hurricane Thanksgiving is a very old holiday. It is one of the oldest holidays we have in the Virgin Islands. From historical records we can go back to 1726 when the first service was conducted in one of the oldest standing structures on St. Thomas which is over 300 years old Fort Christian."

Mr. Jackson is the Director of the State Historic Preservation Office, in Charrlettamolly.

"The purpose of Hurricane Supplication Day is what?"

"To pray against hurricanes, that you will not have a hurricane hit the islands. And, if it did it would spare lives and the property damage would be minimized. So, most people pray that they will not get hit by a hurricane."

Hurricane Thanksgiving is a local holiday in the Virgin Islands. And it is paired with another observance earlier in the summer called Hurricane Supplication day.

"We've been spared so far even though we've had a close call recently. We're still watching the sky praying that we don't get hit.

So, some of the prayers have been answered so far?

Yes, if you believe in prayer, prayer changes things and we've been very blessed.
