Weather Camp Remember the days of summer camp? Swimming, boating, arts and crafts, and reading weather charts. Weather charts? Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton and this is The Weather Notebook. Studying weather charts along with dew point, wind speed, and barometric pressure are just a few of the things that students at Pennsylvania State University's Meteorology camp will be doing this summer. Professor of Meteorology, Bill Syrett, also the camp director, said that he didn't need inspiration for the idea. "Basically, a couple of us weather weenie types felt that there was a need for exposing kids in middle school to a week long flood of weather knowledge". A flood, though, doesn't even begin to decribe what these kids will be doing during the week they will be attending. "On day one" fade under script... And that's only up until Tuesday. The goals of the camp aren't just fun and forecasting, though. Syrett wants to attract a greater diversity of people to the discipline. "It's typically a white male dominated field and so we've kind of skewed this to underrepresented groups and I think we have a 50/50 split between males and females and quite a few underrepresented groups as well". So many in fact that the leaders had to close the roster at three dozen weather crazed kids and the demand doesn't surprise him either, says Syrett. "We knew they were out there, we're not the only weirdos on this planet". That was Bill Syrett, head of Pennsylvania State University's weather camp for kids.
