Sunscreen and Snowboards Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton, and this is The Weather Notebook. By now, many people in cold-weather climates have had enough. They're sick and tired of winter and are ready for the warm springtime sunshine. Well, almost everyoneHere's what today's commentator Scot Henley has to say. Early this year I got married in a beautiful mountainside inn-- it was the perfect winter ceremony, fire crackling in the fireplace, snow falling gently outside. It fit us quite well. But when we began planning our honeymoon, we realized that we would certainly need a little warm weather R & R after the hectic, stressful wedding planning process. So we did what thousands of cold-weather residents do every winter, we decided to go south. All the way to Nevis, a sleepy little island next to St. Kitts. It was perfect. Quiet, secluded beaches, swaying palm trees and incredibly friendly people. The temperature never dipped below 78 -- A tropical paradise. But a strange thing happened down there. I was lying on the beach in my flowered shirt, lathered up in SPF 35, and I started thinking of my snowboard at home! There I was, sitting in the sun, sipping pina coladas with my wife, and I couldn't help but think of carving a big, fat turn on New Hampshire corduroy, legs burning, trees whipping by. Well, by the end of our stay on that wonderful island, we were sad but we were ready to go. And when the airplane pilot said over the PA system that the temperature in Boston was 25 degrees, dozens of passengers gasped. But I didn't. 80 degrees is nice, don't get me wrong. But there's something really special about wintertime. Like seeing your breath as you exhale and the child-like giddyness you feel when a big winter snowstorm is approaching. Yeah, I guess that's my kind of paradise. Commentator Scot Henley lives in North Conway, New Hampshire. |
