What Snow Brings
12/26/2002
Listen in RealAudio
Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton for The Weather Notebook. Last year, residents of Buffalo were prepared
for snow, but 82 inches? WBFO News Director Mark Scott:
MARK: The National Weather Service began forecasting a tremendous Lake Effect Storm two days
before the storm hit. On Sunday, December 23rd, there were warnings all day long that it was
coming and, sure enough, on Christmas Eve the storm moved in.
BRYAN: I was thinking about this story and thought "Well, this is Buffalo. People are used
to this snow." No big deal?
MARK: This was a big deal. Seven feet is a big deal. What made it easier was that it
happened during Christmas week. School was closed so there was no problem of buses being on
the road. A lot of people take the holidays off.
BRYAN: So, in general, how did folks react?
MARK: They seemed to enjoy it, again because it happened during Christmas week. Had it
happened at another time there might not have been as much enjoyment out of the time, but kids
were out sleighing and people were skiing. There was a driving ban in Buffalo through Sunday,
the Sunday after Christmas, and that was five days later, and the Mayor was getting perturbed
because that Sunday morning people were ignoring it. They were out sight-seeing, they were
going to areas where there was a lot of snow so they could take a look at it and he eventually
relented and gave up on the driving ban.
BRYAN: Well, you know it must be a big deal if people in Buffalo are going out to look at
snow.
MARK: (Laughing) It really was -- it was unprecedented.
