Georgia Snow
01/09/2003
Listen in RealAudio
Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton and this is The Weather Notebook. While many people consider a snowstorm
to be an inconvenience, others view it as a gift. Today's commentator, David Clark prays for
snow.
They're calling for snow, even in South Georgia. I keep thinking about how back in 1973 it
snowed 18 inches in one day. Even as cars were sliding off into ditches, they were saying the
snow wouldn't present much of a problem. Now, they call it The Great Snow of '73. Folks
around here are getting ready. Children aren't sleeping well tonight because they keep
getting up to ask momma and daddy if it's snowing yet Momma and daddy aren't sleeping well
tonight because they're wondering if there'll be any work or school tomorrow. The grocery
store is sold out of everything worth eating since everyone is anticipating being snowed in
for the next week in the much ballyhooed storm. I've got a full jar of peanut butter, three
links of Mr. Truett's sausage, a loaf of bread, and a long row of beautiful mustard grains out
in the garden. I've got a tank full of gas for the propane heater. Down here in South
Georgia we view a good snowfall as a gift from god for having behaved ourselves in the five
years since it last snowed. I'm thankful to be down here with a tank full of gas and plenty
of food and lots of fields to walk in. We've been behaving God, let it snow!
Musician and commentator David Clark comes to us from not so snowy, Cochran Georgia. The
Weather Notebook is a production of The Mount Washington Observatory and is supported by
Subaru of America and the National Science Foundation. Special thanks today go to our
marketing manager, Melody Nester.
