Happy Birthday
Mon Nov 03, 2003
Listen in RealAudio
Hi, I’m Bryan Yeaton, and this is The Weather Notebook. This month, The Weather Notebook turns
ten years old. So what we thought we’d do, was go back and talk to the original host and
producer, Dave Thurlow and Doug Mayer, and swap lies about the old days.
Doug: Dave had a great idea. It was actually, I think, a pretty good – good – good match
because I had a slight clue about production for public radio and, uh,
Dave: Doug also knew what doors to knock on. I didn’t really know "How do you get to a radio
station?" Do you call them up and say "I want to talk to the program director", things that
are so basic.
Boy, I remember. We actually used the WMWV studios and Skip Sherman, who was the owner of
that station, was a huge, huge advocate and big help; and Doug’s experience – not just in
public radio, but his experience from maybe even in producing and actually cutting tape – we
were using the old fashioned way. We’d be there late at night in the studio and, um, I’d whip
together something nearly profound about weather and Doug would record and slit tape and say:
"Say that over again."
What are the founders doing now? Here’s Dave:
I’m the Executive Director of a museum and historical organization, education organization
called The Northern Forest Heritage Park.
Doug went back to his old home, on Car Talk.
I’m their senior web lackey, uh, and that basically entails producing the Car Talk website and
I work on various other Car Talk projects, the Shameless Commerce Division and, and various
other things that we have going on.
Bryan: Anything else that you’d like to add in – in closing?
Dave Will you hire us back?
Thanks to Dave and Doug for their time, and their little idea that took hold. Thanks also to
Subaru, and The National Science Foundation, and especially, our listeners. Happy Birthday.
