Sounds of Snow
Thu Jan 22, 2004
Listen in RealAudio
Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton and this is The Weather Notebook.
Does snow make sound? Well, it does fall quietly. But if you ask kids about snow, you'll
likely get an earful of commentary:
"Wet and cold."
"Snow is a soft kind of waterish thing. It's snowish, kind of, well, I shouldn't say snowish.
This creamish, soft, powdery ... It's just something that's really cold, white, and powdery,
OK?"
"It's very, very, very, VERY, VERY cold."
"I think snow is ice which is in the mountains and in our country when there is cold
temperature it falls down from the sky."
"In winter, from the sky, when it is cold and the temperature will also be cold and it falls
slowly like a paper to the ground."
"It's very cold and wet and you can slip off it easily. So, you can easily fall off snowy
mountains too."
"You can slide on it if you're not really careful and it can get cold and that's VERY
cold."
"Sometimes it feels like clouds and when it's sunny sometimes it melts."
"I know something about snow. If it's very high up it snows and if it isn't it doesn't snow
and in some places it's very cold and it snow everywhere in winter."
The Weather Notebook is a production of the Mount Washington Observatory and is supported by
Subaru and the National Science Foundation.
