Hi, I'm Bryan Yeaton for The Weather Notebook. Cape Breton Island is a stunning, hilly land plunked into the Atlantic just northeast of Nova Scotia. The Cape breeds hardy folks, who earn their living from the sea.

JERRY: I'm Jerry Briand from White Point. I fish for a living.

JOHN: I'm John Dixon from White Point and, uh, I'm a lobster fisherman.

Jerry Briand and John Dixon haul their lobster pots pretty much every day, in season. It can get pretty cold offshore, but the big problem is wind.

JOHN: Our worse air is north wind, or northeast or whatever. She blow pretty hard that way. She gets pretty dirty, right?

BRYAN: Yeah.

JERRY: Like John said: 25, something like that, we gotta power off. I mean you can't do no more for the day -- just a little too rough.

BRYAN: So, the, uh -- the direction of the wind really affects the -- the seas that you're dealing with?

JOHN: Oh, for sure, yeah. North and northeast is our worst air.

BRYAN: South wind, the, uh, seas stay pretty calm?

JOHN: Yes, south is not too bad, it could blow pretty hard -- or southwest -- west is good wind, too. Like I say northeast is our worst air.

BRYAN: Now, will you look for a specific type of weather before you head out or you just head out and deal with it and decide out there?

JOHN: Oh, no. You just go and check her out and if it's good you stay and if it's not good you come in. We go out about -- about 3:30 and we're back in around twelve or one o'clock in the afternoon.

BRYAN: And, uh, how many times a week do you go out?

JOHN: Every day. Two hundred seventy five traps a day, right?

We'll continue with John and Jerry tomorrow. The Weather Notebook is produced by the Mount Washington Observatory and funded by Subaru of America and the National Science Foundation.
