DJ: I’m David Johnson. I’m the new Assistant Administrator at NOAA for Weather
Services – That’s the Director of the National Weather Service.
BY: Hi, I’m Bryan Yeaton for The Weather Notebook. In January, David Johnson was
sworn in as the new chief of the nation’s weather forecasting organization.
DJ: (Laughing): It’s going great so far.
BY: Before coming over to the civilian side, Johnson retired as a Brigadier General
from the United States Air Force where the last job he held was Director of Weather.
DJ: I got into the weather business because the Chief of Staff of the United States Air
Force called up and said: "I need an operator to come in and work in weather." So for
the last 3- 3 1/2 years, I was the Director of Air Force Weather during a pretty extensive
re-engineering effort there. And (I) got excited about weather and that’s the reason I
applied for and was fortunate enough to get this job.
BY: So what really excites you about this position?
DJ: I’ve got about 5,000 skilled, educated, smart people whose total focus is the
mission of the National Weather Service -- that do a great job; And I’m looking
forward to working with a group of professional people like that. And, like we already
talked about a little bit, the tools are all coming together right now. And that’s an
awesome mix – the tools and the people. There are opportunities to do even better
things for America.
BY: More with David Johnson tomorrow. The Weather Notebook is a program of the
Mount Washington Observatory, supported by the National Science Foundation and
Subaru: Driven By What’s Inside.
