Okay, admit it—if you are listening to this program, you are probably something of a
"weather geek." But believe me, there’s absolutely no shame in that! Hi, I’m Bryan
Yeaton, and this is The Weather Notebook.
Well, if our radio show whets your appetite for weather research, experiences and lore,
there is a magazine out there which is right up your tornado alley. And it’s called
"Weatherwise." Lynn Elsey is the editor.
BY: And for those folks who don’t know what "Weatherwise" is, if there’s anyone out
there, what’s it all about?
LE: Well, it’s the magazine about the weather. So, basically, we cover everything from
the latest storms, you know, tell you about what Hurricane Isabel’s done or about to do.
We might mention some of the latest research. We also do regular features like
Weather Queries and people write in and ask questions about things and we have a
specialist who answers them. We do a review of the weather—how much snow they
got in one place and the hottest place in the country—that kind of thing. And we also
feature a lot of really fantastic photographs of storms— everything from lightning to
tornadoes.
BY: Can you tell us where the title of the magazine comes from?
LE: From something that Benjamin Franklin said. Some people are "weatherwise," but
most are otherwise.
BY: So, who’s this magazine geared toward?
LE: It’s written for a general audience who has an interest in the weather but you don’t
need to be a specialist or have a degree in it. It’s not highly technical; it’s written in a
way that the general public can understand.
We will talk more with Lynn tomorrow. The Weather Notebook is supported by the
National Science Foundation and Subaru—Driven By What’s Inside.
