Hi, I’m Bryan Yeaton for The Weather Notebook. Today, Heather Liston takes us to the
City by the Bay:
Before I moved to San Francisco last February, I asked my friend Stephen, who grew
up here, what the weather would be like. He started in on a description that went
something like this: "Well, about April 10, in the morning, it’ll be very chilly and the fog
will be heavy. By about 10:30, the fog starts to roll out and you begin to see the top of
the Golden Gate Bridge. That’s when you know things are changing. By noon, the
temperature will be up around 65 degrees, but then . . ." Another time he began:
"September and October are the most beautiful months. On September 1st, it will be
sunny and warm by 11 a.m. A bit of a wind picks up shortly after lunch but then it blows
off again and the afternoon sun still warms the city until 4 when the tide starts to come
in . . ."
I pressed another friend and he said, "Take a windbreaker."
In general, summer seems to be colder than winter here. But that doesn’t mean every
hour. In August, I usually woke up under my down comforter with the automatic
radiator hissing, and by midday I’d be out running around in shorts.
And not only do the hours bring major changes, but the neighborhoods do, too. It can
be dark, overcast or raining close to the ocean at exactly the same time it’s beach
weather at my inland place.
I no longer bother to listen to weather reports since the anchors couldn’t possibly know
what time of day I’m going out, or which streets I will be on. I just take a windbreaker.
The Weather Notebook is generously supported by Subaru of America, and the
National Science Foundation.
